"Sven Vath"などで知られるドイツのテクノ・レーベル 「HARTHOUSE」から、1992年に世界デビュー。世界最大のテクノ・フェスティバル「LOVE PARADE」に日本人アーティストとして最初に招待され、逆輸入アーティストとしてKen Ishii、Yoshihiro Sawasakiなどと共に日本に紹介される。その後も日本を始め、アメリカ、イギリス、オーストラリアなどで作品をリリース。実に10以上もの名義を持ち、20枚ものアルバムをリリースしている。現在は自身のレーベル 「skintone」もスタートし、イギリスのレーベル"LEAF"やNYのレーベルからのライセンスも始まり、「NME」で大きく取り上げられるなど、多くのメディアで非常に高い評価を得ている。またDJやライブアクトとしても世界各国のフェスティバルやクラブに出演。国内でも「フジ・ロック・フェスティバル」「レインボー 2000」 をはじめ、多くのイベントに出演。
2000年末には、12/30にパリ最大のセレクト・ショップ 「コレット」 が主催する"GROOVISION EXHIBITIONのオープニングに招待されてDJ。そして、2001年最初にも、1/13にロサンジェルス「MOCA」での村上隆スーパーフラット展オープニング・パーティーでDJするなど海外でのDJの機会も数多い。
2001年1月31日には、2000年に"サブライム"からリリースしたアルバム「ZERO」のリミックス・アルバム「ZERO REMIXES」をリリース。"Kyoto Jazz Massive"、"Malawi Rocks"など国内アーティストの積極的な起用に加え、"Si Begg"、西ロンドンの"Bugz in the Attic"、ドイツの"Steve Bug"など、多彩なリミキサーがヨコタ･ワールドを飾る一枚になっている。さらに「ZERO」が、UKのExceptional Recordsからライセンスリリースされている。
2002年には1月に、「自身を投影させた、パーソナルかつ情緒的、情熱的な」アルバム、「Sound Of Sky」をリリースした。このタイトルは2002年3月に同じくUKの"Exceptional Records"からライセンスリリースされた。5月には約1ヶ月に渡るUKライブ・ツアーを敢行、そして6月にはskintoneから「boy and tree」をリリース。
2003年には"Playlabel"や"skintone"からも作品をリリースし、精力的な活動を続けている。
One of the most respected and prolific artists in Japan, Susumu Yokota first attracted worldwide attention in 1992 when the legendary German trancelord Sven Vath picked up on a bootleg record of his early work and offered him a recording contract with the Eye-Q record label.
The resulting release - 'Frankfurt - Tokyo Connection', quickly established Yokota in Europe, especially Germany. Yokota quickly gained the respect and admiration of many of the leading figures in the blossoming techno scene, including Dr. Motte and Harthouse Records, and he became the first Japanese artist to be invited to perform at the world famous Berlin Love Parade in 1993.
In 1994, Sublime Records was formed in Tokyo by Manabu Yamazaki and the label's first release was a 7" single from Yokota, followed swiftlyby the album 'Acid Mount Fuji'.
From there, Yokota started to take on different approaches to musical composition, releasing under many different names, each with a different, often thematic style. As Ringo, he recorded the album 'Plantation' for Sublime Records in 1995, a melodic and thought - provoking body of music. As Prism, he recorded two albums exploring the 'deep house' idiom for Sublime Records - 'Metronome Melody' also in 1995, and 'Fallen Angel' in 1997. He also released a more breakbeat-inclined album 'Cat, Mouse and Me' for Harthouse around that same time.
1998 was another bumper-year for Susumu Yokota; his 'Blood Of The Angel' EP, (featuring a remix from Ian Pooley) helped pave the way for the Sublime Records LP '1998'. These well-received releases have led to him being invited to perform live and DJing in cities such as London, Barcelona, (including the Sonar festival and Florida club), Copenhagen and Berlin.
Yokota has also found time this year to release an album of very special thematic music entitled 'Magic Thread' on his own new label - Skintone. 'Image 1983-1998', which features music he recorded back in 1983-4 and some new tracks inspired by those recordings, was released in Japan in November. This album takes a lot inspiration and influences from visual art - forms and also includes prints of some of Yokota's own art in the sleeve. Tokyo based label NS-com has also released an album by Yokota - 'Greenpeace', under the monicker Stevia.
Susumu Yokota's love affair with exploring the boundaries of new music continued with the release of the album '1999', the EP 'Future Memory' and a Japan/European tour. Yokota has been hailed one of the future forces of world techno/house by Mixmag twice in 1999! His 20th album 'Zero' was released Japan July, 2000 (released worldwide on Sept. 24th, 2001 through Exceptional Records.) to rave reviews and once again raises the bar for DJs everywhere.
